A tea pet is the small figure that lives on a tea tray. You splash it with the rinse water every time you brew, and over months the metal darkens and settles into a softer tone. It is not an ornament to dust but a small thing that ages quietly alongside a daily habit.

Lily™ is that figure, cast in solid brass, sitting cross-legged with its knees flat on the table. Between its feet is a small lotus pad, bored through with a socket sized for a standard incense stick. Push one in and light it, and the smoke rises straight up past a very calm frog.

It is small, about 4.5 cm tall, roughly the height of the little cup next to it, and heavy for its size because it is solid metal and not plated hollow-ware. The weight stops it shifting when the tray is knocked and keeps a burning stick upright.

It is sand-cast, so no two are quite alike: the patina settles into every recess and the raised edges rub bright where your fingers touch. Put it on a tea tray, a windowsill or the corner of a desk and let it do its one job.

Let the stick burn out completely and cool, then tap the ash out of the socket. A cocktail stick clears anything that sticks.

Wipe with a cloth, dry or barely damp. Brass is meant to darken; if you prefer it bright, buff it now and then with a brass cloth. Avoid abrasive cleaners, which strip the antique patina from the cast detail.
